Would like to hear from people who’ve experienced it… have knowledge about it the pro’s and con’s. Are you satisfied with your vision after surgery?

I paid about $4500 5 years ago and had it done at a place called Adelaide Eye Laser centre. I can’t remember the exact name of the procedure, but it was where they cut a thin flap of the cornea, folded it back and then laser corrected the surface of the eye, then put the flap back in place. I went from around -4.0 diopters in both eyes and slight astigmatism, to 20/20 vision. When driving at night with bright car headlights at a distant if I concentrate on it I notice a very slight halo around the lights, which is one of the listed downsides but don’t notice it generally, and compared to the vision I use to have I would quite happily pay double for the procedure.

Like any surgical procedure there are risks, but if like myself you follow all of their recommendations to the letter before and after the procedure, you will be fine. Some people get one eye done at a time just in case, I took the plunge and got both eyes done at the same time and have never looked back.

Do your research, when visiting a place check out their website, don’t just rely on patient testimonials, the place I went to was one of the more expensive, but the Dr who done my procedure was one of the guys who had helped develop the procedure in Australia and had written multiple medical papers on the subject.

I’m considering laser treatment, but my prescription is -15 in both eyes, can it still be done?

With that type of prescription you are unlikely to be accepted for laser surgery. However permanently implanted contact lenses may be a possibility. I would suggest that you discuss this with your optician.

And did insurance cover all or any of it?

I hear ads on the radio and see billboards all the time saying things like, "starting at $299 per eye" and such. That seems very reasonable, but is it for real?

Honestly, its better you consult a specialist to find out what’s best for you. I really want to help but I don’t think I can give better answers than specialist do. Sorry.

good luck

I am planning to do a LASIK or Laser Eye Surgery, does it has any disadvantages doing it? and what is the difference between Laser and Lasik, which is better and why, I am hesitating whether to do it or not, also I don’t know which one should I choose LASIK or Laser.

P.S. My vision is not so bad, it is something like 1.7 – 2 degrees deviation, am just sick wearing glasses. :)

Thanks in advance.

LASIK stands for LASER assisited In-Situ Keratomileusis, so there is a Laser being used on your eye during the procedure. The doctors will make a "flap" of your cornea using a microkeratome and then apply the Laser to your cornea shaping it and correcting your vision. They carefully replace the flap and you’re done. It is important after LASIK that you do not rub your eyes for a couple of weeks to let the flaps heal back to normal. Your doctor will provide shields for you to wear at night so you don’t rub your eyes while you’re sleeping.

The only really negatives that occur regularly are:
A) Dry eyes, if you have dry eyes prior to the procedure they will be more dry after the procedure.
B) Your correction isn’t totally corrected – you may need an enhancement to get your vision perfect.
C) If you have Presbyopia (the need for reading glasses) and you have both eyes corrected for distance, you will still need reading glasses, you can talk to your doctor about possible Monovision or Mini-Monovision if you’re just about 40 or over 40.

Laser Eye Surgery is for people with complications in their retinas, or Glaucoma. A Laser is applied either cauterizing blood vessels in a wide range of spots and sizes for retina. It can be used to open angles in narrow angle Glaucoma. It can also be applied to patients that have cloudiness after cataract surgery to remove cloudiness.

Lasik is one of the best types of corrective eye surgery. LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. This procedure can permanently reshape the cornea, which is the clear covering of the front of the eye with the help of a laser. LASIK is performed on millions of people every year. There are a wide variety of different optical lasers. This procedure can be used to correct near and far sightedness as well as astigmatism.

Before you can get LASIK surgery done you need to get your eyes examined by a doctor to see if you are a good candidate. If you wear contacts, you will have to stop using them for a few weeks before the Lasik surgery and only wear your eyeglasses. This is to allow the cornea to return to its original pre-contacts shape, or else the measurements of your eye may be wrong, resulting in poor results after surgery. These measurements help the doctor decide how much tissue is to be removed from the cornea, and have to be redone a week after your first evaluation as well as before the LASIK surgery, to make sure the eye has not changed.

Common LASIK is not the only game in town anymore and it is not the best procedure for every candidate. Find an eye surgeon who is comfortable and experienced with several other procedures, like LASEK, CK, PRK, HD LASIK and clean lens replacement, including some of the latest technologies. If you find out that your eye doctor is knowledgeable about these other procedures, you should feel safe in his or her choice as to which one is right for you.

Most patients do not report any problems after the laser surgery. The number of problems is less than 1%. The surgery is done on an outpatient basis for nearly everyone. You can usually return to work the next day.

Side effects can happen with any type of surgery.

After the surgery, the number one complaint for candidates is dry eyes. The reason for this is the laser eye surgery decreases the lubrication amount for the eyes. The severity of dry eyes can vary from serious to very serious. These problems can be solved by using artificial eye drops commonly found in any drug store.

Undergoing LASIK surgery or any other type of laser vision correction can be a daunting task. Does the reward of having freedom from glasses or contacts make it all worthwhile?

Laser eye surgery is gaining in popularity all the time. Although quite frightening to some people, this corrective eye procedure is very safe and effective. Some common questions and answers associated with such surgical procedures are posed in this brief article.

Q: How safe is laser eye surgery?
A: Similar with other forms of surgery, eye surgery does have potential risks that you should be aware of. The exact success of surgery is impossible, what is done is that an accurate prediction is made based on the large numbers of people who underwent the same procedure in the past. Major complications associated with this type of surgery are very rare.

Q: Is laser eye surgery painful?
A: The surgery its self does not cause any pain. What may be felt is a small pressure on the eyeball and surrounding region during the operation. Some degree of discomfort and/ or pain occurs for 2-3 days after laser eye surgery. Lasik eye surgery typically has less pain associated with it, compared with the other types of eye surgery available, e.g. PRK.

Q: Is guaranteed perfect vision from LASIK and PRK generally achievable?
A: Not at all. Since each patients eyes react differently to treatment no 100% guarantee of perfect eyesight is available. Past operative achievements are used to generate an estimate of the chances of creating perfect eyesight.

Around 95% of people with low levels of myopia and astigmatism (maximum three diopters) who undergo laser eye surgery tend to achieve near-perfect or perfect vision. Higher levels of astigmatism or myopia still allow the majority of patients to gain near-perfect or perfect vision, although there is a significant chance that contact lenses or glasses may be required from time to time. If so required further surgery can be made to improve the patients clarity of vision.

Q: The corrective surgery is effective for what period of time?
A: After your eyes have healed from the operative damage caused the final effect is permanent. In some cases that are extremely rare regression occurs. Further surgery is possible to correct this. The vast majority of people who’ve undergone corrective eye surgery have eyes that remain in focus. Normal changes in the eyes do occur, as you get older your eyes may become slightly shorter sighted. Patients are only operated on if their focusing error is deemed stable.

Q: Is it possible for both eyes to be surgically corrected in the same day?
A: So as to be safe operations on each eye take place two weeks apart. This method allows the vision from the corrected eye to stabilize before the other eye is operated on. Any infections that could, however rare, appear are less likely to spread from the operated-on eye to the healthy eye.

The benefits of LASIK eye surgery are so many that you may not want to wear your spectacles anymore. Before you take an appointment with the surgeon, let’s tell you more about these benefits.

Quick Results

This is one of the most wonderful benefits of laser eye surgery. The patients’ vision improves significantly within minutes of the surgery! Although it takes about 6 months to obtain perfect visual acuity, during the follow-up eye examination, the patients usually show almost perfect vision. The eye check-up is done a day after the surgery. You’re gonna throw away your spectacles or contact lenses immediately after LASIK surgery!

Freedom From Spectacles/Contacts

For those who have been wearing spectacles or contacts for many years, it has become a way of life. However, deep inside their heart, they still wish for a life without spectacles. LASIK eye surgery fulfills your wish.

After this surgery, you need not worry about the daily chore of cleaning your contacts, wearing them, and taking care of them. You need not worry about your eyes getting too dry to let your contacts fall off. You can even wear your eye make-up without the fear of it irritating your eyes and damaging your contacts. Great!

You get freedom from the daily contact lens care, purchase of solutions, creating space for the bulky spectacle case or solution bottle in your baggage while traveling, and other such sort of cumbersome processes.  And don’t forget the amount of money you’ve been spending till now in buying those solutions and changing your contacts every 6 months, or in getting your choice spectacles. And if you have a habit of wearing disposable contacts, you really need to think seriously about laser surgery. You can’t go on spending dollars on these expensive pair of “polymer eyes.”

Increased Self-Confidence

This is one of the biggest things that can happen to a patient opting for vision correction the laser way. The level of self-confidence can alter your life. There are many people who hate their specs hanging over their noses. Everyday, they drag themselves to the office or marketplace with a stooping self-esteem. How do they look? What will people think about their appearance? Are they attractive enough in specs?

Thanks to laser surgery, tens of thousands of patients have got back their lost self-esteem. And this is especially true for patients with disoriented vision. They used to find it hard to move around in dimly lit restaurants and clubs, or even approach that sexy blonde on the dance floor. How embarrassing it is to topple over a chair or slip down the stairs due to disoriented vision! With eye surgery, your social life gets a new high.

Chance To Try Out New Activities

Would you ever think of skydiving, kayaking, swimming, or playing rugby with your specs on? And what about those who dream to build a career in aviation, law enforcement, and other such fields?

Had it not been for the benefits of LASIK eye surgery, they would be picking up the shattered pieces of their dreams with long faces!

The risks involved in Lasik eye surgery is relatively small compared to other types of surgery. However, there is still a risk which is there because of the use of the blade that is used to cut the flap in the cornea. The use of this blade comes with the element of human error. This is because all human beings make mistake from time, although this risk is reduced the more highly trained someone is. However, this risk is still there.

Bladeless LASIK lowers that already small risk even further as it removes the need for a blade. This function is taken over by IntraLase lasers which are controlled by computers and can therefore provide a more precise cutting action. Because bladeless LASIK is so delicate that it can even be used on people who have thin corneas. These are people who usually not approved for other types of laser surgery.

Bladeless LASIK offer a number of advantages. The IntraLase laser used during bladeless LASIK allows for an increased curvature, hence lowering the margin of error even more. The fact that a laser is used instead of a blade leads to less infections and irritation. Not only that, bladeless LASIK only leads to a shorter recovery period compared to other types of LASIK eye surgery.

Before bladeless LASIK, many people who had surgeries had to come back for follow-ups or to redo a surgery that didn’t go so well. There is also a great deal of irritation that follows other surgeries. However, with bladeless LASIK most of these are something of the past, because of a success rate that is very close to 100%.

So now you may wonder, why do we need an eye doctor for if the lasers are doing everything? Well even though many of the actions are controlled by lasers, these lasers still have to be directed. And to be able to do that you need to have the knowledge of both laser technology as well as eye surgery, which only a trained LASIK eye surgeon can give you. Surgeons who do bladeless LASIK now also need to know how to operate the computer that controls the InterLaser lasers.

Although bladeless LASIK may cost a bit more, many people think it is worth spending that extra money, considering the near perfect results you get. Not to mention the reduced irritation and shorter recovery time.

After you receive laser eye surgery, can your vision still get worse? I’ve been wearing glasses for years and im only 18, andit seems like i keep having to get stronger prescrption, so i was wondering if it would be sort of A CURE-ALL?

Laser eye surgery is not a cure-all. Your eyes can change after surgery, just like they can change after getting an eyeglasses prescription. They could change in a year, or in ten years, or they might never change.

This is one reason that laser surgery is only performed on adults — because your eyes are more likely to change when you are younger.

If you have surgery, and then your eyes change, you can get a laser "enhancement" — that is, they’ll do another surgery to correct your eyes to your new needs.

Remember, though, that laser eye surgery involves removing corneal tissue. So you can’t just keep doing the procedure again and again.
